History:

The band formed in 2001 when Noah (vocals and guitar) and the k (drums/bass).

The origins of 101A lie in a band called decay, formed after bassist/programmer the k placed a recruitment advertisement and noah responded. The initial lineup included the k on drums and noah on vocals and guitar. After members left, the k switched to bass while noah played guitar and sang, and the two continued working together in changing configurations, sometimes using programmed drums or working with temporary drummers.

They had their first-ever headline show in October 2001. the k played the drums standing.

The album "01" was released in 2003.

For the record release show on November 21st, the guest guitarist was nabe (DEFMASTER, acid android), lucky-y was their support drummer.

They had their first-ever London show in 2005. The following year, in 2006, they released "one day" and performed at Fuji Rock!

Continuing into 2006, the band performed at an event organized by acid android, sharing the stage with yukihiro!

They also embarked on a European tour, and upon returning in December, held a triumphant homecoming headline show at Shibuya CYCLONE! The story of formation was completed when Sally (drums) joined the band in 2006 for the Europe tour.

After appearing on a music program on South Korea's EBS TV, touring four European countries, and performing at the FIRE FOX FESTIVAL at Shibuya BOXX in September 2007, Sally—who had previously been a support member—finally joined the band officially.

They released our 3rd album, "lethe", in January 2008, followed by the "not-album" "unknown" in December of the same year. Then, in October of the following year, they held their own event, "flood floor: Byakuya no Zanzou" (Afterimage of the White Night), at Shelter. The tradition of holding events on October 1st began that year.

In 2010, theyreleased the music video for "loveless". Then, on October 1st, they held a headline show titled "flood floor -Lost Way-" at Shinjuku LOFT which was released on DVD.

In 2011, the fourth album "4" was released. The music video for "luminous" was also released on DVD.

The following year, 2012 they released the best-of album "Aomitsu". In April, the band performed at the major Taiwanese festival "Spring Scream 2012," and in August, they kicked off the "Blue Syrup Tour 2012" (covering Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Guangzhou, and Macau). After a headline show at Koenji HIGH and performances in Sapporo and Tomakomai, they held the tour's final headline concert in Taiwan.

In 2013, 101A produced the music video for "Forbidden Sky" and headed to Serbia. They performed at the legendary EXIT Festival.

After returning to Japan, they held a headline show on October 1st at the Shibuya CHELSEA HOTEL.

They gave out an advance copy of the track "0-gōshitsu no Tabibito" (Traveler of Room 0) from the album that was released the following year. That year also saw them tour China and they performed at the MIDI Festival held in Shanghai.

In 2014, the year kicked off with a trip to Australia in April While on tour, they celebrated Noah's birthday in Melbourne.

After returning to Japan, they released their 5th album, "0-gōshitsu no Tabibito" (Traveler of Room 0), in June. The artwork was created by Ken Nikai and comes with a postcard set as a bonus.

Then on October 1st of that same year, they held a headline show at Shindaita Fever and released their 1st single "missing link". The version of the song included on the 2019 album "dance in a dim…" is a re-recording of the song.

International activities:

101A began performing outside Japan in the mid-2000s. In an interview, the members recalled arranging their first London appearance at the Bull & Gate themselves, with noah handling the initial booking by email over approximately a year. The band subsequently returned to London and received further invitations to perform in Europe.

The group later performed in Belgium and France and expanded its activity to Asia. According to the same interview, a Korean audience member who had seen a 101A concert subsequently invited the band to appear on a Korean television music programme, which resulted in a one-hour feature. The band later released music in Taiwan and toured parts of China, including Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen and Zhuhai.

101A also performed in Serbia. After meeting a Serbian organiser while playing in China, the band was invited to Serbia, where it subsequently played a series of concerts. The tour culminated in an appearance at the EXIT Festival. The band's official biography lists appearances at EXIT Festival in Serbia and MIDI Festival in China among its international activities.

In Japan, 101A appeared at the Fuji Rock Festival in 2006. The festival's official archive lists the band at Naeba Shokudo on the 2006 programme. Contemporary coverage by Fuji Rockers described 101A as a three-piece and highlighted noah's vocals and guitar playing and the band's grunge-oriented sound.

Sally initially performed with 101A as a support drummer before becoming a permanent member. the k explained that Sally's playing had impressed both noah and himself and that he was subsequently invited to join officially.

The three-member lineup has remained the band's core configuration.

In 2020 they released their 2008 single "0 -rei-" digitally. They also released the Split CD "GHOST OF ROMANCE" with emmurée and MUNIMUNI.

In 2024 they released their "2nd Not Album" (EP) "killing dress" followed by "3rd Not Album" (EP) "bone 'n' ash" in 2026.

Musical style:

The band subsequently developed a sound combining distorted rock instrumentation with programmed elements and noah's vocals. Their official biography describes the music as incorporating grunge, industrial, shoegaze and progressive music, while an earlier Skream! interview specifically discusses influences including shoegaze and industrial music.

Their sound is characterized by rough, heavily distorted instrumentals overlayed with delicate, melodic female vocals. They have created songs in a variety of styles, including everything from soft, melodic, cinematic pieces to bright, energetic, beat-driven instrumentals; sharp but brooding sounds paired with screaming vocals, and gentle, expansive, uplifting ballads. Each song evokes new scenery and demonstrates the band's unique style and striking individuality.
