Biography

Alessandro Demophon—also Alexander Demophon, Alessandro Demophonte, and in some catalogues Alexander Demophon Venetus—was an early-sixteenth-century Italian composer and improvising musician associated particularly with Bologna. His securely surviving music includes the four-voice frottole “A che son hormai conducto” and “Vidi hor cogliendo rose” in Ottaviano Petrucci’s Frottole Libro VII of 1507, together with the sacred laude “Volgi gli ochi, o madre pia” and “Senza te, sacra regina.”

Giovanni Filoteo Achillini named Demophonte among Bologna’s accomplished musicians in 1513, and documentary scholarship suggests that he probably later entered the service of Bishop Giambattista Casali around 1529. His birth and death dates remain unknown. Modern recordings include performances by the Huelgas Ensemble, Cappella Musicale San Giacomo Maggiore, Doulce Mémoire, Phaedrus and, most recently, The Marian Consort.
