Biography
On this free improvisation meeting between the noise guitar legend of the Tokyo psychedelic underground and American master improv bassist, along with percussionist Sabu Toyozumi, the trio work in sparse abstract improvisation, fluttering whispers of tone, scattered knots of stringy interplay that rise and dissolve as quickly as they appear. This 1991 recording sees the trio subsume their heavier sides, opting for a distinctively European approach to post-jazz improvisation. Although Haino keeps his noise rock battery close at hand, occasionally his guitar flares up into the fractured punishing feedback -- Phillips' bass saws Arco patterns while the percussion scrambles for grips in an abstract landslide of sound. The trio recording emits the feeling that this avant-garde trio is digging for some illusive sense of the truth. Suffice to say, the trio consists of heavyweight improvisation players who are probably tipped to find it. Fans of Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, and Derek Bailey's abstract power trios should give this a serious listen.
