Biography

Out of the salt-tinged air and coastal calm of Monterey, California, The Bill Edmonds Trio emerged in the late 1950s with a sound that perfectly captured the mood of the Pacific. Formed in 1958, the trio was led by pianist and composer Bill Edmonds, whose understated nuanced and harmonic sensibility became the group’s signature.

Joined by Reggie Cole on upright bass and Marty Glenn on brushed drums and subtle percussion, the trio carved a niche in the West Coast cool jazz scene with their relaxed tempos, impressionistic voicings, and intimate interplay. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano, and the quiet pulse of the ocean, their music evoked late-night coastal drives and fog-draped mornings.

Their 1958 debut album, Hat in Hand, recorded live in a single weekend at a converted chapel studio in Carmel, is a masterclass in restrained elegance. Featuring originals like “So they Say ” and “Spring Flowers,” alongside tasteful renditions of standards, the record was quietly influential—earning admiration from jazz insiders and later becoming a hidden gem among crate diggers and cool jazz purists.

Known for their performances at tucked-away Monterey cafés, wine bars, and the occasional festival stage, the Bill Edmonds Trio never chased the spotlight—but their music glowed with the gentle intensity of a candle in the California twilight. Though the trio disbanded in 1969, the trio still endures as a timeless tribute to the coastal soul of jazz
