The song originated from a piece of short fiction. Black Door 74 lead singer Rigo wrote a short story for the inaugural issue of The Ranger's Almanac, an independent print journal of nature, art, and literature. In the story, a fictional character composes a song while at Emerald Lake in Sequoia National Park, California. Black Door 74 subsequently recorded that fictional song, releasing it as "Emerald Lake." The lake referenced in both the story and the song is the Emerald Lake of Sequoia National Park.
