There's something in the air today. Some sort of distant sound, echoing through the woods and whispering its' way through this town. Some sort of distant hot-air balloon circus man or medicine box-top travelling show. Perhaps a maniacal flute player piping past the city gates. Wonderfully wicked or violently proper. . . Brent Randall and his Pinecones are an exciting and interesting pop-group from city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Songwriter, Brent Randall, conjures up fantastical musical fairy rhymes and nursery tales for the indie set. Wistful crooning, backward ballads to magical fairground romps. The Pinecones, his nimble and noble cast of cabaret cowboys and bubblegum dandies, are a special collection of Brent's talented peers from some of his favourite Halifax groups and fellow Just Friends artists. David Ewenson (Winning Hearts, City Field, Sweet Tenders), Joel Goguen (Laura Peek and the Winning Hearts, Sweet Tenders) Brian O'Reilly (Their Majesties), Jess Lewis, and Laura Peek! They aim to please and please you they will!
In 2004, they released their debut recording "Quite Precisely, Brent Randall and his Pinecones." as the first release on the Halifax-based artist collective Just Friends Records. The release attracted critical aclaim and charted on campus stations across the country. Brent Randall and his Pinecones are busy working on their full length follow-up due out spring 2007, to be produced by the Heavy Blinker's Jason MacIssac and featuring string and horn arrangements by David Christensen.
"Brent brews together elements of Van Dyke Parks, Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman into a type of music that Alice might have heard down the rabbit hole." -Jason MacIssac
" Not only has he played bass in lots of bands over the years (mainly in Halifax), but he also writes his own stuff, and its really interesting. It's got an almost cabaret feel, with a taste of Paul McCartney, a sip of Brian Wilson, and a Hermann Hesse backdrop." -Rhiannon Thomas, The Current, St. John's
"Randall mixes cryptic nostalgia with a melodic sense that recalls old Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson Records (it)..also references the harmonic complexity of the Beach Boys-thanks to elaborate vocal cameos by The Maughams-and the British music hall whimsy of the Kinks." -Stephen Cooke, The Chronicle-Herald, Halifax.
