His influences range from South African jazz figures such as Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Kippie Moeketsi, Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim to American hip-hop and neo-soul artists including D'Angelo, Bilal, Dwele, Q-Tip, J Dilla and Earl Sweatshirt. Rather than belonging completely to one tradition, Khalil's music often sits somewhere between jazz, soul, experimental hip-hop and alternative R&B.
Khalil is also a producer, working under the alias DarkSoulChild. Much of his music is self-produced, with bedroom-studio recordings becoming an important part of his aesthetic. He also founded the independent label Sons Of Sam .LLC.

Current Work
Following Can I Live?, Brutha Khalil is currently working on a still-untitled album.
The project is heavily influenced by the musical atmosphere of 1999–2004, particularly the period when neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop were becoming increasingly intertwined. The sound draws inspiration from the warmth and experimentation associated with artists such as D'Angelo, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Common, The Roots, J Dilla and Q-Tip, while also incorporating Khalil's interest in abstract rap.
Rather than being a straightforward recreation of early-2000s neo-soul, the album uses that era as a foundation for something distinctly Khalil: warm soul textures, loose grooves, jazz-influenced instrumentation, intimate melodies and hazy production combined with fragmented imagery, unconventional flows and abstract lyricism.
The project represents another stage in Khalil's development, bringing together two sides of his musical identity — neo-soul's warmth and abstract rap's experimentation.
The album currently has no official title or release date.
Sound
Brutha Khalil's music is difficult to place within a single genre. His catalogue moves between abstract hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, alternative R&B and experimental music, often within the same project.
His production tends to favour atmosphere over polish, with samples, dusty drums, jazz textures, soulful chords and imperfect bedroom-recording qualities becoming part of the sound itself. His lyrics frequently turn inward, examining family, relationships, spirituality, identity and the strange experience of growing up.
Across his releases, Khalil's music functions almost like a personal archive — each project capturing a different period of his life and another stage in his development as an artist.
