Crying City
Biography
Crying City is a Korean-American songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Los Angeles (previously the Bay Area). Born Minha Kim (Minh) in South Korea, she moved to the U.S. as a child, growing up primarily in Phoenix, Arizona, after a brief time in Indiana. She studied neurobiology at UC Berkeley with plans to pursue medicine but began writing and sharing songs on TikTok during college.
Her music merges lo-fi DIY production, atmospheric indie/dream/bedroom pop, and introspective lyrics. Breakthrough singles “Urn” and “Lucky” (2023) helped build a substantial streaming audience, leading to a deal with Soka Records / Mercury Records. Key releases include the 2024 EP You’re Still The Luckiest Thing To Happen To Me… and the 2026 album HOW’D I EVEN HIDE IT.

The stage name “Crying City” was inspired by cyberpunk aesthetics—imagery of rain at 3 a.m. in a city—and the idea of people crying for different reasons. Kim has described her work as soundtracking “those moments after midnight when all of your feelings come to light at once.” She has no formal training in songwriting or singing beyond her instrumental background and approaches music as a way to express personal thoughts sonically.
