Biography

Philip Darrell Core (12 September 1945 – 23 August 2013), known professionally as David Garrick, was an English singer best known for his 1966 pop hit single "Dear Mrs. Applebee".

As a teenager, Garrick sang in a Liverpool church choir and later developed an interest in opera. He obtained a scholarship to train as an opera singer in Milan, Italy, where he studied for two years before returning to Liverpool. He was a regular visitor to the Cavern Club, where he performed an improvised opera excerpt from "Pagliacci" and became known locally as "The Opera Singer". Robert Wace, manager of The Kinks, later invited Core to London to record a debut single. He adopted the stage name David Garrick, taken from the 18th-century actor and playwright.

Garrick released his first singles, "Go" (1965) and "One Little Smile" (1965), which did not enter the charts. In 1966 he released a cover version of The Rolling Stones' "Lady Jane", which received airplay in the United Kingdom and reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart, and later reached number 5 in the Netherlands. Later that year he released "Dear Mrs. Applebee", a cover of a song first recorded by Flip Cartridge and written by Billy Meshell and Phil Barr. His version reached number 1 in Germany, number 3 in the Netherlands, and number 3 in Flanders, while reaching number 22 on the UK Singles Chart.

In subsequent years, Garrick released additional singles and albums but did not achieve further chart success. He had two minor chart entries in Germany in 1967. In 1970 he moved to South Africa and Egypt, where he lived for several years. During the 1990s he returned to Europe and attempted a musical comeback, primarily in Germany. In 1999 he recorded "Apassionata", produced by Mal Jefferson at Mastersound Studios in Southport, and released on Prestige Records. He continued to perform at festivals in Germany during this period.

Garrick died in Wirral, England, on 23 August 2013 at the age of 67.
