Biography

De Nihilisten (Dutch for "The Nihilists") is (or was) a rap group formed in the coastal area of West Flanders, Belgium in the early 2000's. Members of the group are Don (beats & music), Riemeloare (lead vocals) and DJ Tweet (cuts & scratches). Just like 't Hof van Commerce; they rap in their mother tongue, West Flemish, the local dialect of the province West Flanders. This dialect is a lot different from the other Flemish dialects from East Flanders and Antwerp and the Dutch language, thus not easy to understand for "outsiders".

In 2003, De Nihilisten won the NEKKA (Nederlandstalige KleinKunst Antwerpen) contest; a contest for Dutch talent. They were rewarded with the oppertunity to perform on the big stage of the Antwerp Sportpaleis, at the Nekka-nacht ("Nekka Night"). Because they won the contest, they got the oppertunity to record their debut album; which was released in 2004 and named "Etwoaschen Tussenin" (Somewhere Inbetween). The album was released by Witlof Music and was well-received, though they never released another album after that. Riemeloare, however, featured on Morsdood's "Stap voor Stap" (from the 2004 album "De Waarheid Kwetst"), 't Hof van Commerce's "In De Rayoeng" (from the 2006 album "Ezoa en niet Anders") and Garçons Débilles' "Dialect Es De Tool" (from the 2006 album "Ontoerekeningsvatbaar").

"Etwoaschen Tussenin" was dedicated in memory of their friend Filip Ryelandt (DJ Filip), who died in a traffic accident. DJ Filip is featured on the track "Rebels Zoender Koas" ('Rebels Without Cheese'). Track 9 of the album; "E Minutje Voe..." ('A minute (of silence) for...'), is a 1:12 track without rap lyrics, dedicated to DJ Filip. Other guest artists also appeared on the album; DJ Daranged (on "Up e dag" ('One day')), Indegenous ("In me stroate" ('In my street') and Hannelore Bedert; who sings the refrain on "'k Zyn zo Blije" ('I'm so Happy').

It's unknown if De Nihilisten will ever release a new album. Their official website, www.denihilisten.be is no longer online.
