History:
deadman is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Nagoya in 2000 by former members of kein.
The band was founded by vocalist Maco (眞呼) and guitarist aie, alongside bassist Yukino and drummer Toki (トキ). Emerging from the darker side of the Nagoya visual kei scene, deadman developed a sound characterized by heavy guitar work, bleak and atmospheric arrangements, dramatic vocals, and an intense live presence.
They formed out of remnants of Lamiel and kein, two closely-knit bands at the forefront of the Nagoya visual kei scene. Maco (vocals), aie (guitar), and yukino (bass), all formerly of kein teamed with Toki (ex.Lamiel) for the original lineup.
deadman played their first concert on 6 January 2001 at Nagoya DIAMOND HALL, with Maco on vocals, aie on guitar, Yukino on bass and Toki on drums. Their first one-man concert, half PRICE half MENU, followed on 20 March at Nagoya ElectricLadyLand. Yukino left the band in April 2001, after which bassist Takamasa joined as a support member. deadman subsequently began building a following through extensive touring, including the eight-date subliminal show tour in May 2001 and the three-date in T.V. one-man tour in August. Later that year they embarked on the twelve-date SITE OF SCAFFOLD event tour, further establishing themselves within the Japanese underground visual kei circuit.
In early 2002, deadman relocated from Nagoya to Tokyo. Takamasa became an official member in February, completing the lineup of Maco, aie, Takamasa and Toki. The band continued an intensive touring schedule, including the three-date deadman tell no tales one-man tour, the thirteen-date Hirusagari no Jekyll to Hyde national tour, and a series of two-man tours under the title Toumei Drive (東名トライブ) with bands including MERRY, Nightmare, D'espairsRay and Nookicky. Their activity during this period helped connect deadman with several of the major names of the emerging early-2000s visual kei scene.
deadman's output during the early 2000s included releases and limited recordings such as Hirusagari no Jekyll to Hyde, Kunou no Naka no Taegatai Sonzai, and the SiteOfScafFold material. In 2003 the band undertook the eleven-date dark tour and released no alternative, followed by the three-date no alternative one-man tour. Their activity expanded to further two-man performances, including a tour with Fatima, as well as the three-date Amefuri no Himawari one-man tour later that year. By this point deadman had become one of the notable bands associated with the darker Nagoya-derived visual kei sound.
The band's activity continued to grow in 2004. They toured extensively, including the six-date deadman tour_2004 (Kari), a three-date two-man tour with D'espairsRay, and the multi-part desert house one-man tour. On 3 October they held a sold-out one-man concert at Shibuya CLUB QUATTRO. They subsequently released ℃ and ℃+1 and began the three-date Shibitokaku (死人格) two-man tour with Jinkaku RADIO. In December they began the ℃~degreeds centigrad~ tour, continuing into 2005.
In March 2005, bassist Takamasa announced his departure from deadman. He officially left the band on 6 April following the eight-date misery loves company tour. The band continued as a three-piece consisting of Maco, aie and Toki, with bassist Kazuya joining as a support member later that year. During this period deadman released Seija no koushin, 2clips and 701125+2, while undertaking further one-man and two-man tours. Their November 2005 tour with lynch., titled David Lynch, was followed by additional joint performances in early 2006.
deadman's final period before their original hiatus culminated in a European appearance in January 2006, when they performed in Paris at Le Trabendo as part of a two-day European trip that also included Germany.
They then embarked on the twelve-date in the direction of night light tour. At its final performance at Ebisu Daikanyama UNIT on 18 March 2006, a flyer announcing the band's final tour was distributed.
deadman subsequently announced an activity pause on their official website. The six-date last tour [endroll] began on 6 May and concluded on 23 May 2006, after which the band entered an indefinite hiatus.
During their hiatus, deadman's catalogue continued to receive attention and several older recordings were reissued or repackaged. Releases and archival material included endroll, deadman_2002~2004.mov, deadman_2005.mov, deadman_2006.mov, a second pressing of in the direction of sunrise and night light, and no alternative 2.0. These releases helped preserve the band's legacy during their absence and contributed to renewed interest in their early work.
deadman briefly reunited for a one-day revival concert on 22 June 2019 at Nagoya THE BOTTOM LINE. Maco and aie performed with support bassist Tetsu of MERRY and support drummer Asanao of lynch. The reunion was followed by an official resumption of activities for one year, beginning with the one-man concert deadman oneman 2019 -before the dawn- at Ebisu LIQUID ROOM on 9 September. The band subsequently performed at Shinjuku LOFT, held a fan club talk event, and embarked on the three-date tour2019 -twilight-.

At this stage the band continued with Maco and aie as its permanent core, while the rhythm section was provided by support musicians, most notably bassist kazu of the god and death stars and drummer Asanao of lynch.
On 6 January 2021, exactly twenty years after deadman's first concert, the band held the twentieth-anniversary one-man concert bouquet of distress at Nagoya DIAMOND HALL, the same venue where their career had begun. The anniversary year was followed by a series of major concerts, including the two-performance Kanjou no Nai Gekitsuu to Hakuhyou ga Kishimu Oto at Nagoya THE BOTTOM LINE on 20 March, Kiri ni Ukabu Akari, Meimetsu wa Doukou at Shibuya ON AIR EAST in May, and the Shikeidai no Melody two-man tour with cali≠gari. deadman also undertook the four-date Douke no Kakashi Japan tour and reunited with lynch. for the two-man series DAVID LYNCH 2021 in September.
In December 2021, deadman renewed their official fan club, formerly known as fuzz, under the name as fuz, and signed a deal with MAVERICK DC GROUP. On 4 December they performed a two-man concert with the god and death stars commemorating the twentieth anniversary of David Skull No Records. Former deadman members Toki and Kazuya joined Maco and aie on stage for two songs, marking a rare reunion of the band's pre-hiatus lineup.
In 2022 deadman entered a particularly active phase of their post-hiatus career. They released I am here and I am here -disc 2- and began the three-date Doku to kusuri to ro no nezumi tour in January. On 23 May, the band held the special concert endroll 2006 / endroll 2022 at Shibuya ON AIR EAST. The performance brought together both incarnations of the group: the original pre-hiatus lineup of Maco, aie, Kazuya and Toki, and the contemporary lineup of Maco, aie, kazu and Asanao. Later that year deadman performed a series of two-man concerts with RAZOR, ARLEQUIN and DEZERT under the title co starring of the dead.
