After graduating from Bennington College in 1988, where she studied theater, she moved to Brooklyn, NY, and quickly became a part of the avant-garde scene, both in music and interdisciplinary performance. She joined the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble in 1990, and remained a member until 2003. She has also worked with renowned composer Tan Dun, and several other artists including John Kelly, Ken Butler, and Gary Lucas (she can be heard vocalizing on the latter's album, Leveling the Playing Field), to name a few. She has performed at such venues as Lincoln Center, and Brooklyn Academy of Music, and has also performed with various theater companies (e.g. Tiny Mythic Theater Co.,The Talking Band, et.al.) in New York as well as Europe. She has also performed at such venues as The Knitting Factory and The Kitchen in the NY underground of the 90s. In 2000, Emerson moved to Las Vegas in order to replace a lead singer in Cirque du Soleil. In 2002 she moved to her native California to pursue her own creative projects (both collaborative and individual). She has created and/or co-created a body of multi-media works which tend to incorporate and combine music, extended vocal techniques, texts, monologues, choreography and physical theater, installation art and electronic media, in a way that makes categorization difficult. In late 2010 Dina Emerson moved back to Las Vegas, where she currently performs in the Cirque du Soleil production Mystere.
