Biography
Djevelsort is a Norwegian symphonic black metal project from Hamar, Innlandet, founded in 2024 by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Hagen. Initially conceived as a solo project, Djevelsort brings together atmospheric intensity, elaborate orchestral textures and the cold, melodic sensibility of Scandinavian black metal.
The project's sound combines tremolo-picked riffs, driving rhythms, sweeping keyboards and grand symphonic arrangements, balancing aggressive black metal passages with expansive melodies and atmospheric interludes. Rather than relying solely on rawness or relentless speed, Djevelsort builds immersive soundscapes that emphasize drama, dynamic contrast and a distinctly epic character. Its musical approach draws inspiration from the 1990s Scandinavian black metal tradition, particularly the symphonic and atmospheric directions explored by bands such as Dimmu Borgir and Emperor, while incorporating a more progressive dimension.

Tom Hagen handles the songwriting, guitars, keyboards and programmed drums, with Evgeny Zoidze-Mischenko contributing vocals, Rich Gray performing bass, and Eivind Staale Hauge providing acoustic guitar on the debut album. Gray's fretless bass adds a fluid, melodic quality that complements the project's layered arrangements and expansive atmosphere.
Djevelsort released its debut full-length, Peril of Freedom, through Dusktone on August 28, 2026. Spanning seven tracks, the album explores the tension between atmospheric grandeur, melodic intensity and darker introspective passages, establishing the project's identity within the modern Norwegian black metal scene.
With its fusion of symphonic arrangements, immersive atmospheres and traditional black metal aggression, Djevelsort pursues a sound that is both expansive and sinister, balancing the grandeur of orchestral metal with the cold darkness at the heart of the genre.
