Biography
Contrabassist, currently based in New York City. Active in free improvisation and other radical musical styles, he covers many stylistic areas, from the most intense free jazz to minimal textural explorations (with a particular focus on the work of the Wandelweiser composers collective). Appears on albums with Philipp Wachsmann and Bruno Guastalla (as the Imaginary String Trio); with Taylor Ho Bynum, Harris Eisenstadt and Alexander Hawkins as the Convergence Quartet (first album on FMR, second on Clean Feed); with Hawkins again and with Alex Ward and Paul May as Barkingside; and with Tony Bevan and Chris Corsano on the CD Monster Club. He also appears on the debut recording of Alexander Hawkins' sextet, No Now Is So, the follow-up to which will be released in 2011. His duo with percussionist Patrick Farmer is documented on the CD Bestiaries. His performance of Radu Malfatti's composition Cafe Oto 1 for double bass and sine waves was recently released on Malfatti's b'boim label. Other musicians he has performed with include Tony Conrad (in duo and quartet settings) and Evan Parker (in duo, quartet and large group settings). Newer ensembles include Alex Ward's free jazz/rock quartet Predicate and two trios - one with saxophonist John Butcher and guitarist John Russell and the other with guitarist Joe Morris and trumpeter Nate Wooley.
