Biography
Dragging an Ox Through Water is the long-running solo project of American musician Brian Mumford, whose work drifts through the blurred boundaries of lo-fi folk, ambient drone, experimental collage, and melancholic songwriting. Since the early 2000s, Mumford has built a deeply personal catalog that resists easy categorization, favoring atmosphere, imperfection, and emotional immediacy over polished production.
Drawing inspiration from outsider folk traditions, tape experimentation, field recordings, and slow-moving drones, Dragging an Ox Through Water creates music that feels both intimate and otherworldly. Songs often emerge from layers of acoustic guitar, fragile vocals, organ, found sounds, and decaying tape textures, balancing haunting beauty with a quiet sense of unease.
