Biography

Eloy is a German rock band founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann. The band is best known for its progressive rock music.

The group has undergone numerous line-up changes throughout its history, with Bornemann remaining the only constant member. During the 1980s, after a series of internal changes and splits, the band moved towards a more commercial musical direction. In later years, former members rejoined, and in 1998 Eloy released the album "Ocean 2", which marked a return to the symphonic progressive rock style for which the band had originally become known. Although the band developed a strong following in Germany, it did not achieve significant commercial success in the United States.

The band's name is derived from the Eloi, a human race depicted in H. G. Wells' novel "The Time Machine". The name was chosen to reflect ideas of new beginnings and artistic independence at a time when many German rock bands primarily performed cover material and struggled to secure recording contracts for original work.

To mark its 40th anniversary, Frank Bornemann reactivated the band in 2009. After an eleven-year gap between studio albums, Eloy released "Visionary". In 2010, the double DVD "The Legacy Box" was issued, featuring archival television recordings, video material from across the band's career, and a documentary on its history. In 2011, the band performed at festivals in Germany and Switzerland with a line-up similar to that of the 1994–1995 tour. A planned appearance at the North East Art Rock Festival in 2012, which would have been their first concert in North America, was cancelled after Bornemann was injured in a road accident earlier that year. In 2017 and 2019, the band released two albums based on the legend of Joan of Arc.

Although Eloy emerged during the same period as the krautrock movement, they are not considered part of that scene. Their early work was influenced by hard rock and blues rock before the band gradually shifted towards a style associated with progressive rock, symphonic rock, and space rock.
