Biography
Garefowl is a project connected to the archipelago of St Kilda, Scotland. Reflecting on the history, environment and traditional music of these islands, Garefowl suspend their folk instrumentation in drones made from processed field recordings collected from around the island. The project is a way for founder Ewan Macdonald to reckon with the past, through folk stories (and songs) that detail St Kilda's threatened fauna. Garefowl is made up of American multi-instrumentalist Nathan Bontrager, Irish bouzouki player Stuart Graham, American guitarist Chris Jones (mandolin and concertina), cellist Jess Whelligan and Richard O'Flynn, who handles the "island sounds" and drones.
