Biography
Johann Caspar Horn (1636–1722) was a German composer, jurist and musician active principally in Leipzig and Dresden. Alongside his legal career he took an important part in Leipzig’s student musical culture, producing the multi-volume Parergon musicum, a substantial collection of dances and instrumental suites. After moving to Dresden he served as an honorary music director at the Frauenkirche and Sophienkirche.
His largest surviving sacred collection, Geistliche Harmonien über die gewöhnlichen Evangelia (1680–81), comprises 76 instrumentally accompanied settings covering the church year. Among them is the Christmas concerto “Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit,” documented as having been performed at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche and now recorded at least twice commercially. Modern recordings include the Dresdner Kreuzchor/Cappella Sagittariana version for Berlin Classics (2009) and the Kammerchor der Erlöserkirche/Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble recording for Christophorus (2020).
