Biography

Johann Gottfried Vierling was a German organist, composer, and music-theory writer, born in Metzels in 1750 and active chiefly at Schmalkalden, where he followed the organist-composer Johann Nikolaus Tischer. His music is centred on practical keyboard and church use: the 1789 Choralbuch, the 144 leichte Choralvorspiele, easy organ pieces, and keyboard sonatas including the 1781 Sechs Sonaten für das Klavier, dedicated to Johann Philipp Kirnberger. Vierling also wrote pedagogical treatises, including Versuch einer Anleitung zum Präludieren für Ungeübtere, and taught Johann Christian Friedrich Hæffner, later active in Sweden.
