Biography

Johann Nikolaus Tischer was an eighteenth-century German organist, instrumentalist, composer, and keyboard pedagogue, born in 1707 and active for most of his career at Schmalkalden, where he served as court and town organist until his death in 1774. His securely recoverable music is chiefly for keyboard: small suites and partitas for learners, the 1754 Musicalische Zwillinge, the manuscript seasonal suite cycle Die Vier Jahreszeiten, and pieces such as the Presto in A attributed to him in the Nannerl Mozart notebook tradition. He taught Johann Gottfried Vierling, who succeeded him at Schmalkalden.
