Biography
Johann Wolfgang Kleinknecht (1715–1786) was a German violinist and composer whose career traces the pathways of an ambitious court musician in the mid-18th century. Born in Ulm on 17 April 1715 into a musical family, he received his first instruction from his father, the Ulm musician Johann Kleinknecht, and was already performing with enough distinction to attract princely attention while still a child. In 1733 he entered the orbit of the Württemberg court at Stuttgart as a chamber musician, where his development as a violinist was shaped by the Kapellmeister Joseph Anton Brescianello, a figure associated with high-level Italianate string playing in German courts. After the duke’s death he spent time moving between courts before taking a position at Eisenach, and in 1738 he made a decisive step to Bayreuth, where he directed an opera and was appointed Konzertmeister (concertmaster) to the margrave’s Hofkapelle.
Kleinknecht’s life also belongs to a small dynasty: authority records link him as brother to Johann Stephan Kleinknecht, and he stands in the same family line as other Kleinknechts active in Bayreuth and Ansbach musical service. In 1769 he relocated with the court musical establishment to Ansbach, remaining there until his death on 20 February 1786. Music survives under his name in later catalogues and editions—including at least one violin concerto listing and several sonata attributions—hinting at a repertory that modern editors and libraries have continued to circulate even as his profile faded behind more famous contemporaries.
