Biography

Johnny Blue Skies is a moniker adopted by American musician, songwriter and singer, John Sturgill Simpson in 2024 as a result of his distaste for the celebrity status he had attained. The moniker had been used in Simpson's work several times before, including as the name of a production company for the Sound & Fury film and as an easter egg in the artwork to A Sailor's Guide to Earth.

In July 2024, he released his first album under this moniker, Passage du Desir. Inspired by Simpson's travels in Europe and Asia in the years following his 2021 vocal injury.

In March 2026, the second JBS album was released (this time sharing billing with his band The Dark Clouds) - Mutiny After Midnight. It was initially released exclusively on vinyl, CD, and cassette. Simpson described the album as a "dance record" inspired by the fusion-funk band Stuff and Marvin Gaye. The album was briefly published on Simpson's YouTube channel prior to its official physical release. The album was later made available digitally in June 2026.
