José Brocá
Biography
José Brocá y Codina (1805–1882) was a Spanish Romantic-era guitarist and composer closely linked with Barcelona’s nineteenth-century guitar scene. Born in Reus (Tarragona), he is described in modern summaries as largely self-taught, with a brief period of study under the influential virtuoso Dionisio Aguado. In Barcelona he built his reputation above all as a teacher, and later accounts credit him with shaping the next generation—naming figures such as Felip Pedrell and José Ferrer among his pupils and associating him with a wider Catalan circle of guitarists active in the period. His surviving compositions are typically described as a compact body of solo-guitar pieces, valued for their elegant, idiomatic writing and for the way they illuminate a strand of Spanish guitar style that runs through mid-century Barcelona.
