Kalia Vandever
Biography
Kalia Vandever is a trombonist, composer, and educator living in Brooklyn, NY. Her work sounds like it occupies opposite zones at once: secular and sacred, inside and outside, loud and quiet. Vandever's experience allows them to connect with their instrument on an intimate level, wielding it with a level of confidence that sounds fully unlocked. After collaborating with Kara-Lis Coverdale, Joy Guidry and Helado Negro, her latetest solo works sees her backing up her pillowy brass drones with minimalist, Sakamoto-esque piano sequences and soaring vocals. She is also experienced as an educator, having led masterclasses at universities including California Institute of the Arts, Cal State Northridge, Saddleback College, University of Maine Farmington, and University of Missouri. She has also led clinics for organizations including CWU Jenn, Women of Jazz and Creative Music, Women in Jazz Organization, and Live From Our Living Rooms.
