Franzen has created dozens if not hundreds of folk, filk, trad, medieval and renaissance tracks over the years, specializing in shimmering instrumentals and heart-wrenching, plaintive vocals.
His guitar playing is powerful and intricate, and his vocals are nuanced and unaffected, delivered in a warm, rich baritone.

The bands he has played with include Harmon's Peak (American trad), Broceliande (medieval, renaissance and beyond), Four Shillings Short and Slainte (Irish) and many others, and to each he brings a unique musical sensibility that supports, drives and enriches the music of the group as a whole. From children's songs to bawdy ballads to rockabilly, Franzen delivers artistry without affectation and draws the listener in to another world.
