Biography

Knoll is an American experimental deathgrind band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2017. The band describes its music as “macabre funeral grind,” combining death metal and grindcore with noise, black metal influences and unconventional instrumentation. On its official website, Knoll associates its name with an archaic term for the ringing of a mourning bell.

The members began developing the band while still in high school, spending their early years learning to play together and refining material for their debut. Vocalist Jamie Eubanks also wrote and performed drum parts, including those recorded for Interstice. After recording the album, several members moved to the Nashville area, where Jack Anderson joined on drums. Eubanks has credited Anderson’s arrival with allowing the band to reproduce its recordings live and begin touring.

Interstice was released on 26 February 2021. A split with fellow Memphis band Autolith followed that June, before Knoll released its second album, Metempiric, on 24 June 2022. Both full-length albums were recorded by Andy Nelson, mixed by Kurt Ballou and mastered by Brad Boatright. Eubanks described their songs as connected through recurring musical ideas and themes, with Metempiric exploring consciousness, selfhood and the limits of knowledge. His reading in science, philosophy and poetry informed the lyrics.

Their third album, As Spoken, arrived on 26 January 2024. It developed the band’s interest in mourning customs, old literature and the ways language can deteriorate or become distorted as it is preserved and passed on. The arrangements incorporated noise and instruments such as waterphone, while Eubanks created analog films to accompany the album’s tracks. In 2024, the lineup comprised Eubanks, bassist Lukas Quartermaine, guitarists Ryan Cook and Cameron Giarraputo, and drummer Anderson.

Knoll carries this interest in antiquity into its performances, using old lamps as part of the stage setting alongside live electronics and trumpet. The band remains self-managed, handling its releases and merchandise through its own operation and online shop.
