Biography

"L'Âme Immortelle" (French for "the immortal soul") is an Austrian darkwave duo formed in 1996. The band's music often features melancholic or romantic themes, with lyrics in German and English, and combines harsh male vocals with emotional female vocals. In 2004, L'Âme Immortelle moved to the now-defunct Supersonic Records, a subsidiary of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, and incorporated elements of the Neue Deutsche Härte genre into their music. In 2008, the band returned to their previous label, Trisol Records, and moved back towards their earlier electronic-oriented sound.

L'Âme Immortelle was formed in Austria in 1996 by Thomas Rainer and Hannes Medwenitsch. Vocalist Sonja Kraushofer, a former classmate of Rainer, joined the band soon afterwards, and the group began seeking a record contract. Their debut album, "Lieder die wie Wunden bluten", was released in 1997 through MOS Records in Liechtenstein and gained attention within the German dark culture scene.

In 1999, L'Âme Immortelle signed with Trisol Records, part of Trisol Music Group GmbH. Between 1998 and 2001, the band released an album each year, increasing their popularity. In 2002, Medwenitsch left the band. Kraushofer and Rainer recruited guitarist Ashley Dayour from the Austrian band Whispers in the Shadow, and the reformed lineup released the single "Tiefster Winter" in November 2002. In 2003, L'Âme Immortelle released the album "Als die Liebe starb" and the compilation "Seelensturm", which contained reissued and remixed versions of early material.

In 2004, L'Âme Immortelle signed with Supersonic Records, a subsidiary of Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Their first release after the change was the single "Brennende Liebe", a collaboration with Oomph!, released as "Oomph! feat. L'Âme Immortelle". The band also appeared in the song's music video. Later that year, L'Âme Immortelle released the album "Gezeiten", which included songs such as "5 Jahre", "Stumme Schreie" and "Fallen Angel". The album marked a stylistic shift, with less emphasis on the electronic instrumentation that had characterized the band's earlier releases.

The band's eighth studio album, "Auf deinen Schwingen", was released in August 2006, alongside the single "Phönix". The album included songs such as "Wohin", which incorporated text from the earlier L'Âme Immortelle song "Aus den Ruinen", and "Nur Du", which featured a different musical approach compared with the band's previous work. The music video for "Nur Du" was produced as an animated video.

In 2007, L'Âme Immortelle released the compilation album "10 Jahre", a retrospective covering the band's first decade. The album included selected tracks from their previous releases as well as two new songs, "Let Me Fall" and "Come Closer".

In December 2007, Trisol Records announced that L'Âme Immortelle would return to the label for the release of a new album. "Namenlos" was released on 1 January 2008 as a double album. The release was associated with a return to the band's earlier electronic style.

On 18 November 2011, L'Âme Immortelle announced that their tenth studio album, "Momente", would be released on 27 January 2012. On 27 April 2012, the remix album "Fragmente" was released, featuring new versions of ten songs from "Momente", with five remixes created by Rainer and five by Kraushofer.

Thomas Rainer has also been involved in several side projects. In 2000, he released the album "Gesellschaft:Mord" with Joachim Sobczak as part of the project Siechtum. The project later released the albums "Diagnose:Zeit" and "Kreuz:X:Feuer", which included remixes by artists such as God Module and Megadump.

In 2007, Rainer released the first album under his electro-industrial project Nachtmahr, titled "Kunst ist Krieg". The second album, "Feuer frei!", followed in 2008.

Sonja Kraushofer has also released music under the name Persephone. Following the albums "Home" (2002), "Atma Gyan" (2004) and "Mera Sangeet Kho Gaya" (2004), her fourth album "Letters to a Stranger" was released through the Curzweyhl label.

Ashley Dayour, a long-term guitarist of L'Âme Immortelle, has released several records with his other band, Whispers in the Shadow. Their 2020 album was "Yesterday Is Forever".
