Biography

Lasse Lucidor (1638-1674) was a Swedish lyric poet and singer. His real name was Lars Johanson, but he became more known under the name Lasse Lucidor, the unhappy. Lucidor had a short but tempestuous life.

He worked some years as språkmästare (master of language) in Uppsala, but ended his life in Stockholm as a wedding and burial poet. The proud poet thought it was "crazy to sell your freedom for hundred riksdaler a year ("tokot at sälja sin frihet för några hundrad riksdaler om året"), and he practised what he preached: he was killed in duel at a pub in Stockholm.

Lucidor is known for beeing sentenced to jail for writing a wedding poem uninvited to do so. For this he has been known as a representant of the free poet writing from the heart, and not for order.

Lucidor is one of the first known authorship of the Swedish ballad (and is therefore sometimes improperly regarded as one of the founders of the Swedish ballad).
