Early life

LEEPA was born in 1999 in the Lake Starnberg region in southern Germany and spent her childhood surrounded by nature in the Munich area.

At the age of around nine or ten, she moved with her family to Berlin, a transition she later described as a strong cultural shock after growing up in a rural environment.

During her teenage years she developed an interest in pop music and online culture, drawing inspiration from artists such as Katy Perry and Pink as well as early-2010s pop culture phenomena.

The internet and emerging digital music platforms played a key role in her discovery of songwriting and recording, eventually leading her to start releasing her own material online.

Career

LEEPA began her career releasing self-produced tracks during the SoundCloud era before gradually moving into professionally produced pop releases.

Her debut EP Free Leepa introduced her introspective songwriting style, which often addresses themes such as emotional vulnerability, mental health and self-empowerment.

She attracted wider attention with singles such as “Fiction,” “Misery Loves Company,” and “Switch Places,” which combined melancholic lyricism with contemporary pop production.

Her music gained traction on platforms like TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping her reach a broader audience.

In 2021 she finished second in the Radio New Music Award category “Newcomer of the Year” and was listed on several German “Artists to Watch” lists.

During the same period she performed at events connected to the climate movement, sharing stages with artists including Milky Chance and appearing at festivals such as Lollapalooza and the Reeperbahn Festival.

Her later releases marked an evolution in style and language. The single “here/hier” (2023) introduced German lyrics into her primarily English-language catalogue.

Soon after, the track “renn” became her first song performed entirely in German, reflecting a shift toward exploring her native language in songwriting.

Musical style and themes

LEEPA’s music blends elements of indie pop, electronic pop and alternative R&B. Critics have noted her focus on emotional storytelling and introspective lyrics, often addressing topics such as toxic relationships, personal growth and mental health.

In interviews she has stated that one of her central motivations is to create music that offers comfort to listeners who are experiencing difficult moments in their lives.

Activism and public image

Beyond her music career, LEEPA has publicly supported causes including climate activism, female empowerment and LGBTQ+ visibility.

She has participated in climate-related events and collaborated with artists involved in environmental campaigns.
