Biography

Magic Juan is a Dominican-American singer, rapper, songwriter and producer born in Washington Heights, New York City, and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Born John Wilson on 27 July 1971 to Dominican parents, he began studying piano, guitar and drums at the age of ten while also singing in his school choir. He later developed skills in songwriting, rapping and sampling using home recording equipment. After high school he joined the group Proyecto Uno, becoming its lead rapper and vocalist. His bilingual style helped define the merengue-hip hop (merenhouse) sound of the 1990s. With the group he contributed to hits including Brinca, Está Pegao and El Tiburón, the latter later recognised by Rolling Stone among the 25 biggest Latin songs. Proyecto Uno sold several million albums worldwide.

Magic Juan left the group around 2000–2002 to pursue a solo career. His debut album La Prueba (2002) produced tracks such as Ta Buena, Meneando La Pera and La Última Vez (featuring Eddy Herrera). Subsequent releases include Libertad: The Magic Juan Mix (2004), Inevitable (2004), Quiscalle (2007) and The Sure Bet (2009), which incorporated merengue, hip-hop, reggae, bachata and other tropical styles.

In later years he continued releasing music, including the live project Live RD and the 2024 album Superhéroe, which earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Merengue/Bachata Album. A 2025 tribute album, De Rey a Rey, followed. He has also been associated with the Free Cover live series and collaborations across Latin and urban genres.

Often referred to as “El Negrito del Swing” or “El Duro,” Magic Juan is regarded as a pioneer of urban Latino music and the fusion of merengue with hip-hop elements.
