1. The initial idea for this band starts with Steve Rowley, the drummer. He played drums for about 4 years up until 2005 when he regretfully sold his drum-kit since he hadn't been in a band for quite some time. It wasn't long before the desire to play in a metal band came back to him. Over the next few years he worked at a family owned Greek restaurant called My Three Sons in Edgewood, MD where he learned a few words and phrases in Greek. One word in particular stuck out; Malaka, which is apparently the Greek equivalent of 'Motherfucker.' For the sake of its vulgar meaning and general misunderstanding amongst English speaking people, it was decided that he would start a metal band and call it Malaka.
It wasn't until March of 2010 that he purchased a new kit and began practicing almost daily. The ideas for Malaka's music were coming to him but he had no one else to work with in a band until he got to talking to his friend Zane one day. Despite knowing each other since 2004, neither of them knew that the other played instruments and were both very much in to metal music. Steve submitted his idea to Zane, and they agreed to jam.
The first few jam sessions left Zane and Steve extremely impressed with their ability to 'feel' the other's influence and write quality music. It was clear that there was plenty of potential and they would need to look for other members to complete the band.
After getting a new job in April of 2010, Steve met Ryan through work, which is probably the luckiest part of how the band formed. Ryan, who used to be in Run Down Perish as a vocalist, had been looking to form a new metal band for quite some time. It was pure luck that they even got on to the topic of forming a band. Steve, being very impressed with Ryan's sample of his vocal abilities, invited him over for a jam session with Zane. Obviously, things went very well and he was accepted in to the band.
The band was almost complete except for a rhythm guitarist and bass guitarist. P.J. had moved in to a new house in the winter of 2009 and Steve moved backed from Hagerstown and in to P.J.'s new house in June of 2010. Seeing as how P.J. was very musically inclined and capable of playing numerous instruments, Steve invited him all the way across to the other side of the house for a jam session. Ryan and Zane were impressed with him as a bassist and he was entered in to the group. He had been a bass player in a band (Golden Walrus) back in high school back in the early 2000s
One piece of the puzzle still remained, the rhythm guitarist. It took quite a bit of looking around until Ryan finally suggested that they ask C.J. if he wanted to try it out. Being an ex member of Run Down Perish as well, he turned out to be what the band needed. C.J. showed up to practice a couple of times and he was quickly accepted as the final member of Malaka.
The band has written 7 full-length Metalcore songs since its creation and is planning to hit the drawing board again very soon. Before you know it, Malaka will be everywhere.
