2. Malinconia was a Ukrainian gothic doom metal band from Kyiv, active from 2004 to 2015. The band described its music at different times as Melodic Gothic Doom Metal and Atmospheric Doom Metal.
The history of the Ukrainian Malinconia began on January 8, 2004, with the band's first rehearsal featuring vocalist Tatiana Mikhailova. The debut concert took place on April 27, 2004, at the House of Culture of Kyiv National Economic University.
During the summer of 2004, the band worked on new material and established its own rehearsal space. In autumn, Malinconia began actively performing in Kyiv, including a concert celebrating the ninth anniversary of Te Deum and several themed metal concerts with GrimFaith, Inferno and Idol.
In late 2004, bassist Vitaliy Derevyankin temporarily left for England for six months and was replaced by Vladimir Shulga. After Derevyankin returned, Shulga moved from bass to rhythm guitar. In early 2005, guitarist Yury Khomenko and keyboardist Oleksandr Eine left the band. Elena Chebanenko became the keyboardist, while Yury Politko joined as a second guitarist.
In December 2004, Malinconia recorded an early demo version of "Feelings Are Gone". This recording became the basis for the band's first demo, Insanity, released on August 27, 2005.
The four-track demo included "My Insanity – The Dark Side of the Doom", "Lost in Heaven", "Feelings Are Gone" and "Forever Yours". The song "Forever Yours" was later included on the Smashed Ground Compilation in 2005 and Sacratum Magazine 2 in 2006.
In 2005, Malinconia performed extensively in Ukraine, including concerts in Illichivsk, Vinnytsia, Chernihiv and Kyiv. The band also performed at Terrorraiser Fest and Smashed Ground Fest, and performed as a support act for the Polish band Darzamat.
On November 12, 2005, Malinconia performed as a support act for Apocalyptica at the Palace of Sports in Kyiv.
In early 2006, growled vocals were added to the band's lineup with the arrival of Mykola Lykhodid. During 2006 and 2007, Malinconia continued performing at concerts and festivals in Ukraine, including Rock-Sich and ProRock. In August 2006, the band placed second at the ProRock festival in Krolevets. By autumn 2006, the band had accumulated material for a full-length album.
In 2008, bassist Vitaliy Derevyankin was replaced by Oleksiy Motovilnik. Despite the lineup change, Derevyankin recorded the bass parts for the band's debut album before its release.
Malinconia released its debut studio album, Forgotten Dreams, on November 13, 2010. The album contained eleven tracks.
After a period of inactivity, the band resumed rehearsals in 2012 with an updated lineup. Yury Politko returned to the band, while keyboardist Taras Pobelyatsky and bassist Yury Golskyi joined the lineup.
Its last known performance took place on June 5, 2015, at a concert celebrating vocalist Tatiana Mikhailova's birthday.
Malinconia's music has been described as gothic doom metal, symphonic gothic metal, melodic gothic doom metal and atmospheric doom metal.
