Masal’s music is a powerful, complex fusion of several genres:

- Zeuhl & Avant-Prog: Characterized by hypnotic, repetitive basslines, frantic piano arrangements, and dark, operatic or intense vocal movements.

- Jazz-Rock Fusion: Blending intricate brass sections, improvisational woodwinds, and driving percussion that draws comparisons to Soft Machine and Brand X.

- Canterbury Scene: Incorporating elements of whimsical, melodic, and highly technical British progressive rock.

History and Key Releases

The band originally started as a vehicle for Prat's complex compositions, utilizing a dense lineup that included brass instruments, dual guitars, and sweeping keyboard arrangements. Prat himself is known as a musical chameleon—frequently shifting between masterfully playing the piano, drums, and taking on vocal duties depending on the album.

Masal (1982/1984): Their self-titled debut (originally recorded in 1982 and released as a Jean-Paul Prat solo work before becoming synonymous with the band's identity) is widely considered a Zeuhl masterpiece. The album features an ambitious, side-long 42-minute epic that allowed the group to open for Magma on tour.

Galgal & Siempre: After a long hiatus, Prat revived the Masal moniker for modern releases, including albums like Galgal and Siempre. These later works features contributions from major scene veterans, such as Magma bassist Philippe Bussonnet.

Remaining fiercely independent and intentionally outside of mainstream music trends, Masal has retained a cult following among progressive music enthusiasts for over half a century. Jean-Paul Prat captured this uncompromising philosophy in his recent memoir, Masal the Soaring Cathedral, noting that because his music was never "trendy," it could never go out of style.
