Early musical background

Hallén began making electronic music at the age of ten, using FL Studio and sharing tracks through online music forums. His early interest was primarily in trance, although his interest in electronic music later expanded toward styles including hardstyle and dubstep.

At approximately thirteen, Hallén began moving increasingly toward rock music. Electronic music nevertheless remained an influence on his production, and the combination of heavier guitar-driven music with electronic elements would later become part of his approach to songwriting and production.

For a number of years, Hallén continued writing and producing music intermittently, both as a solo project and together with friends. In 2019, he began sharing some of his material through an older YouTube account, although music remained largely a personal project at the time.

Formation of the current project

The current Mattias Hallén project began to take shape in February 2026. Around Valentine's Day, Hallén wrote You're the One That I Breathe For as a Valentine's gift for his wife, Ursula. The song received attention locally and led to contact with Landskrona musician Patrik Svensson.

Svensson invited Hallén to his home studio, where the two began working on music together. The collaboration developed quickly and resulted in a large number of songs being written and produced together, establishing Svensson as a recurring part of the project.

Svensson is a guitarist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist with a background in the Landskrona rock scene. He previously performed in several bands, most notably Ash, with whom he recorded and released multiple EPs. Within the Mattias Hallén project, his contributions include guitar, vocals and other instrumentation.

Ursula Hallén, Mattias Hallén's wife, is also a recurring contributor to the project. Her involvement includes vocals as well as contributions to songwriting, melodies and production.

Musical style and influences

The project's music is principally based around nu metal and rock, but does not follow a fixed genre. Hallén's background in electronic music continues to influence the production, and elements from other styles are incorporated depending on the individual song.

Hallén has cited Skillet, Linkin Park, Bring Me the Horizon, Evanescence, Amaranthe, DragonForce, Trivium and In Flames among his rock and metal influences. His influences also extend beyond rock and metal to film composer Hans Zimmer and electronic and hardstyle artists including Brennan Heart, Coone and Kodex.

This combination of influences contributes to a sound in which heavier rock and metal arrangements can coexist with electronic production, melodic passages and cinematic elements.

Lyrics and themes

Hallén's songwriting is largely based on personal experiences and emotions. Recurring subjects include inner conflict, trauma, love, relationships and experiences arising from difficult periods of life. Individual songs are generally developed around the particular emotion or experience behind them rather than being written according to a fixed musical formula.

Collaboration is also a significant part of the project. Different musicians and artists contribute to individual recordings, allowing the instrumentation, vocal arrangements and genre influences to vary between releases.

Releases

Hallén began releasing music more actively in 2026, with You're the One That I Breathe For marking the beginning of the current collaborative period.

IMPOSSIBLE became an important early release in the development of the project and was followed by further material exploring the combination of rock, metal, electronic and cinematic influences.

The later release Angel of Death continued this development, featuring a heavier and more cinematic direction while retaining the project's emphasis on melodic songwriting and experimentation.
