Melanie Baker
Biography
Melanie Baker is an English indie-grunge singer-songwriter from the Lake District, currently based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Born on 13 September 1998, she initially picked up the piano and guitar as a self-taught teenager to combat severe anxiety. Using songwriting to find her voice, she began her musical journey performing at local folk open mic nights and sharing her early acoustic creations online. Her sound has since undergone a dramatic sonic evolution, shifting away from her quiet folk roots into an expansive, '90s-inspired blend of alt-rock, indie-grunge, and slacker-pop. Backed by a full touring band, her music is heavily driven by raw emotional candour, exploring themes of mental health, heartbreak, sarcasm, and queer joy.
Now signed to the independent label Tambourhinoceros, her tracks—including "Sad Clown" and "All My Plants Have Died"—have earned her consistent airplay across major UK stations like BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, and BBC 6 Music.Baker's reputation on the live circuit continues to grow through high-profile support slots for established artists such as Maxïmo Park, Dodie, and Maisie Peters. Her music has also broken into television sync, with her single "Double Decker Death Machine" prominently featured on the BBC TV drama Waterloo Road.
