Biography

Merol (real name: Merel Baldé, born 10 February 1991 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands) is a Dutch synth pop singer in the 'vaporwave' genre.

Merol appeared on the Dutch music scene in the summer of 2018 as she self-released her track, 'Lekker met de Meiden', an ironic take on girls' friendships. The single became an internet phenomenon overnight. Merol was a 'do it yourself' pop phenomenon at this point, not supported by a record label or marketing company. From the outset stressed that Merol had to be regarded as a persona, a character: "Merol with an o" is decidedly more self-assured, shameless and provocative than "Merel with an e".

Merol kept releasing singles, including her 2019 internet hit, 'Hou je bek en bef me', a very explicit pop song about oral sex: the title is Dutch for 'shut up and lick my p###y', which even in The Netherlands sparked a certain controversy. She released two EP's (2018's Boter and 2019's Superlatief) before releasing her somewhat overdue full-length album, Troostprijs (2022).

Merol kept releasing new music: a steady trickle of singles and EPs, plus two full-length albums, Naar de haaien & weer terug (2024) and the 'happy hardcore'-tinged Leve de feeks (2026). She continues to explore feminism, womanhood, urban life and sex (both disaster and euphoria) in her oft explicit lyrics.
