Biography
Nakul Krishnamurthy is an Indian musician who has been based for over a decade in Glasgow. His radical expansion of Carnatic music conventions explores new ways of conceiving it at the intersection of Western Classical, experimental and electronic music. Daring to adapt 800 years of singular vocal tradition with the radical addition of computer synthesis, resulting in an astonishing elision of Hindustani classical and electro-acoustic music. Instrumental passages resemble a psych-drone right on the cusp of bittersweet abrasiveness, where his voice begins to unfold its glorious function, tentatively mapping the base drone with the stealth of sunrise behind a mountain range, and continuing to limn its scale like the daily arc of light on a breathtaking panorama, until it slides off the page, beyond the horizon. A sublime tension emerges between the dense harmonic richness of the drone and the mathematically-sounded, infinitely extended melodic emotion carried in the artist’s voice.
