Biography
NARYAN is a melancholic and atmospheric rock band from Tampere, Finland. They have been active as a band since 2009, but grew out of an instrumental project that began well before that at the turn of the millennium. They have released four albums in total, with their self-titled debut album being released in August 2013, and the latest album "IV" in March 2026.
The story of NARYAN began back in the early 'noughties', when two guitarists from Tampere, Lauri KOVERO and Harri RANTANEN, collaborated to compose some progressive and melancholic instrumental guitar pieces influenced by bands such as PINK FLOYD, KING CRIMSON and the Finnish psychedelic/progressive rock group KINGSTON WALL.

This was how it was until 2006, when Harri decided to step aside due to personal reasons. Lauri then recruited the bassist Matti VÄHÄTALO, who was looking for a band with artistic ambitions. In the autumn of that year Tommi SUOMALA became the band's vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Matti ITÄRANTA joined - initially solely on drums - but later also becoming a second guitarist.
NARYAN then released a three-track demo in the spring of 2007, but later that year Tommi and Matti decided to concentrate on other projects, so little further progress was made until Dávid KÖTELEKI was recruited as the new drummer, with Harri's brother Henri becoming a temporary second guitarist. In early 2008, Ville KORHONEN joined the band as their vocalist, and NARYAN was back in business, though with Lauri KOVERO once again being the sole guitarist following the end of Henri RANTANEN's temporary spell in the band.
In the summer of 2008, NARYAN finally played its first gig to a selected audience in Ylöjärvi, and later that year Raino KETOLA joined the group as the second guitarist. The band worked on new material throughout the winter of 2008-2009, and was able to produce a double demo plus a few additional songs. At the beginning of 2009 Matti VÄHÄTALO moved to Brazil, so there was now a need for a new bass player, and the band also decided to recruit a keyboardist. Eve SYDÄNLÄHDE was chosen to replace Matti on bass, and vocalist Ville KORHONEN's old friend Sauli SILJAMÄKI joined the band on keys. With this new line-up, NARYAN made its first public appearance later that year.
In 2011 Sauli SILJAMÄKI was called up for military service, and NARYAN borrowed Tytti KALLIONIEMI from the darkwave band RAIN DIARY as a temporary keyboard player. It soon became clear, however, that Sauli was not coming back, and Tytti therefore became the permanent keyboardist. In the spring of that year NARYAN started the long process of making an album. The first single was released on May 18th 2011, and just over two years later the album was finally released.
Following the album's release, Dávid and Tytti decided to continue on their other projects - Tytti in RAIN DIARY and Dávid with Finnish rapper JUJU. Nona ONNELA joined the band permanently on violin in the summer of 2013 after guesting on a couple of tracks of the debut album, and a new drummer and keyboardist were found in early 2014, these being Klas GRANQVIST and Tuomas ILOMÄKI. With this line-up, NARYAN first played a few gigs, and then began recording again. For their second album, "Black Letters", NARYAN signed a distribution contract with Inverse Records.
The making of the second album took almost as long as the first, and though originally due to appear in autumn of 2015, it didn't hit the shelves until January 2016. Further line-up changes then occurred in May 2016, with Paul RYTKÖNEN replacing Klas GRANQVIST on drums and Enni YLI-VIANIO replacing Tuomas ILOMÄKI on piano and keyboards. In March 2017 Tommi TANHUANPÄÄ became the band's drummer and Tommi NIEMI replaced Ville KORHONEN on vocals. In September 2017 NARYAN signed a contract with Progressive Gears Records from Ireland.
Keyboardist Enni YLI-VIANIO also departed during 2017 and bass/flute player Eveliina SYDÄNLÄHDE subsequently became responsible for that role as well. A single called "Until We Meet Again" was released in early December 2017 with Petri JUUTILAINEN guesting on Trombone. Antti VÄLINIEMI joined NARYAN on bass in October 2019 allowing Eveliina SYDÄNLÄHDE to now focus on her keyboard role as well as her flute and backing vocals. The band's third album "The Withering" was released via Progressive Gears Records in December 2020.
Linda KUOPPALA joined on keyboards in late 2020 replacing Eveliina SYDÄNLÄHDE, and Jarno FORSMAN and Henriina MARIN joined in early 2023 on bass and violin, replacing Antti VÄLINIEMI and Nona ONNELA repectively. Guitarist Lauri KOVERO has thus been the only constant member of the band throughout its history. In April 2023 NARYAN signed with The Metallist PR agency to take over their management and promote the band's music worldwide. The album "IV" was self-released on March 27, 2026.
NARYAN's core influences are KATATONIA, ANATHEMA, early RADIOHEAD, PORCUPINE TREE and PINK FLOYD, as well as taking inspiration from various movie soundtracks and classical music. They have played Tampare's annual multi-venue urban music festival 'Tammerfest' on several occasions, and joined Swedish progressive metal band SOEN on the Scandinavian leg of their Memorial Tour in March 2024, supporting their recently released single "Inner Soldier" and performing in both Finland and Sweden.
Most of the players in NARYAN over the years have been multi-instrumentalists, and their gigs and records have featured some unorthodox rock instruments such as flute, violin, harp, cello and sax. The resulting sound is a blend of progressive rock, harder rock and moody ambiance.
