Though he began writing songs at the age of 12, Ahuja originally pursued a completely different path in engineering. Written at a vulnerable late-night hour using an old fountain pen and a detuned guitar, the song was initially rejected by two major record labels. Navjot decided to release the track completely independently, leading to a massive, organic listener-led phenomenon.

Propelled purely by word-of-mouth and viral internet discovery, "Khat" spent over a month at No. 1 on Spotify's Global Viral 50 chart and scaled the top 10 of Apple Music's all-genre chart in India. The track amassed hundreds of millions of streams and successfully transformed the artist from near-obscurity to holding an audience of over 10 million monthly listeners.
