Biography
Los Angeles-based OCCULTS is a post-punk, darkwave, and gothic rock duo formed during the COVID-19 pandemic by #1 Billboard recording artist Emilio Hernandez (guitars, vocals, synth) and Patrick Lawrence (drums, backing vocals).
Emilio Hernandez and Patrick Lawrence first met in 2001 and spent over 20 years as close friends and bandmates, initially playing in the St. Louis dance-rock band Nothing Still. During the isolation of the 2020 lockdowns, Hernandez began writing new demos, aiming to create the exact style of dark, nostalgic music they had dreamed of making as teenagers. Music critics and magazines often describe their style as "gloomgaze" or post-punkery, blending fast rhythms, icy Johnny Marr-style guitar work, and brooding vocals.
