Biography
Ofdrykkja (Old Norse/Icelandic for "excessive drinking" ) is a black metal/post black metal band founded in 2012 in Västerås, Västmanland, Sweden. In 2011, band member Gamle Dalton (a.k.a Drabbard, also of Lepra, Suicide), after having spent a few years institutionalized, formed Ofdrykkja with David Jansson (a.k.a. Pessimisten of Apati, then known as C9H13N) who had recently disbanded his former band as a result of the death by overdose of one of its members. A few months later, Ahlström (a.k.a The Associate of Death Under Siege, Suicide) joined them, alongside Johan Gabrielson (a.k.a 1853) and Stefan Wahlberg (a.k.a Bödeln) .
Themes range from mental illnesses, addictivte substances and poverty in their earlier, post-punk and black metal material such as A Life Worth Losing to themes of paganism and nature in their later, more Neofolk-influenced projects such as Irrfärd, Gryningsvisor and After the Storm.

In 2020, vocalist Pessimisten explained the evolution the sound and themes the band has undergone. Despite utilizing heavy themes often found in DSBM, Pessimisten and the band reject the label: "[...] we’ve always been clear about our differences from DSBM. That scene tends to glorify pain and suffering, whereas we’ve always believed ourselves to do the exact opposite. [...] Yet, while sharing our reality of living with mental illness and drug abuse, we always hoped for a better life whilst others merely celebrated the misery. Writing music and lyrics was like therapy for us. I guess this longing for something else could explain why OFDRYKKJA has evolved into something very different today, while many DSBM bands keep walking in the same old footprints."
