1) Peter Neumann (born March 8, 1940 in Karlsruhe) is a German church musician, conductor and choir director.

Born in Karlsruhe as the son of a pastor (together with twin brother Martin), Neumann studied church music and orchestral conducting in Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Berlin and Paris. In Berlin he was taught how to play the organ by Michael Schneider. After Schneider took up a professorship for organ in Cologne in 1965, Neumann became his assistant in Cologne in 1967 and then filled the position of church musician at the Carthusian Church in Cologne. As a scholarship holder from the German National Academic Foundation, he studied in Paris with Gaston Litaize and briefly with Olivier Messiaen. When it came to orchestral conducting, Neumann was significantly influenced by his teacher Sergiu Celibidache.

In Cologne he directs the Cologne Chamber Choir and the Collegium Cartusianum. Since then he has worked closely with these ensembles in Cologne and performed many sacred works. Neumann concentrated on works from so-called early music to romanticism. He recorded works by Claudio Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms and other composers on recordings. In 1982, Neumann won the Gran Premio Città di Arezzo with the Cologne Chamber Choir, which made the choir known abroad, especially in Italy.

He headed the Carthusian choir until March 2005. In addition to his work as a conductor, he taught as a professor of organ at the Cologne University of Music. In 2015 he was awarded the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig.
