RAG developed from two hip hop collectives active in the Ruhr Area during the early 1990s: Filo Joes, consisting of the MCs Pahel and Galla, and Raid, consisting of the MC Aphroe and the DJ Mr. Wiz. While the group was primarily associated with Bochum, Mr. Wiz originated from Oberhausen and Aphroe from Herne. The members met through local jams and hip hop events and began collaborating under the name Ruhrpott AG.
One of the group's early recordings was the original version of the track "Tief im Westen", which was later released on their second album. The song addressed themes connected to the Ruhr region through associative lyrics and metaphorical imagery.
RAG disbanded in 2003 after releasing two studio albums. Following the breakup, Pahel and Galla each pursued solo careers and released the albums "Natur des Menschen" and "Swing Kid" respectively. Aphroe also continued as a solo artist and stated that no third RAG album would be produced. His debut solo album, "90", was released in 2012.
Galla died in 2011 at the age of 38 following a cerebral infarction.
RAG's music was noted for its melancholic atmosphere and dense lyrical imagery, particularly on "Unter Tage". The group's lyrics frequently explored themes related to life in the Ruhr Area, personal identity, and the hip hop industry. Their use of metaphor and associative language occasionally incorporated fantastical elements. On "Pottential", the group adopted a more direct and harder-edged lyrical style while maintaining complex wordplay and narrative structures.
Tracks such as "Nackte Stadt" and "Pro & Contra" from "Pottential" demonstrated this stylistic development. "Nackte Stadt" presented interconnected perspectives from various urban residents, while "Pro & Contra" employed wordplay based on associations between words beginning with the syllables "pro" and "kon".
The final lineup of Ruhrpott AG consisted of Galla, Aphroe, Pahel, and Mr. Wiz.
