Rick began his musical adventures playing guitar in his father's folk band at age 7. He soon became a rock guitar prodigy, spending years jamming along with records and writing his own songs. He began studying music theory and composition in high school. Rick then spent a year at the Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, followed by three years at UCLA, focusing on composition and film scoring. His first band, Lions & Ghosts, recorded two records for EMI with Rick as principal songwriter and singer.
