Paul was a successful schlager singer in the 1950s after being discovered in 1945 by Walter Jenson at the Crusader Club in Hamburg. She frequently performed together with Bully Buhlan. With the rise of rock and roll in the late 1950s, Paul’s career declined. She married a scientist and lived for a time in the United States, where she primarily focused on her family life. During this period, she appeared in three American films and recorded several records.

After returning to Germany, she attempted to resume her career but was unable to replicate her earlier success. In the film "Wenn die Heide blüht" (1960), a crime and Heimatfilm, she appeared alongside Joachim Hansen. She continued to make occasional television appearances in nostalgia programmes into the 1980s before retiring from public life.

Rita Paul died on 27 March 2021 in Berlin-Zehlendorf at the age of 92 in assisted living.
