Biography

Rophnan Nuri Muzeyin (Ge'ez: ሮፍናን ኑሪ ሙዘይን; born 22 June 1990), professionally known as Rophnan, is an Ethiopian DJ, record producer, singer, and songwriter. He rose to national prominence with the release of his debut album, "Reflection", which is widely credited with pioneering electronic music in Ethiopia and helping bring the genre into the country's mainstream music scene.

Rophnan was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is the ninth of ten children in his family. According to Rophnan, his father gave him the name "Rophnan" after receiving it during a profound spiritual revelation while praying; the name was not intended to have a meaning in any existing language. At the age of 10, he began recording homemade tapes in his classroom, singing and improvising drum rhythms to entertain his classmates. Over time, he developed a distinctive musical style that blends traditional Ethiopian instruments and melodies with contemporary electronic music.

At the age of 16, Rophnan released his first mixtape, marking his introduction to Ethiopia's club music scene. The project quickly gained popularity, and at a time when locally produced electronic music was still uncommon, it was widely played by DJs across the country.
