Biography
Serokolo No. 7, a 27-year-old producer, DJ, and sound-system operator is widely regarded as the OG of the current form of Mapanta. Around 2011, Serokolo No. 7 played a key role in bringing Mapanta back, not by preserving it as folklore, but by reinventing it for the present.
Mapanta is a village-rooted electronic form emerging from Ga Skhukhune (formerly Ga Masha) in Limpopo, South Africa, homeland of the Bapedi (Marota) people. Long before streaming platforms or clubs, Mapanta functioned as a social soundtrack, played at weddings, traditional celebrations, and youth gatherings. It is not a club genre in the conventional sense, but a living communal practice, music as social glue, ceremony, and collective release.
