The group’s debut album, "Wisdom of Elders", was released in 2016. For this project, Hutchings worked with musicians based in Johannesburg and further developed a style associated with spiritual jazz, a genre partly influenced by Sun Ra. The project is often discussed alongside his other work with The Comet Is Coming, another London-based group, which is sometimes described as engaging with Afrofuturist themes in a different manner from Melt Yourself Down.
In 2020, Shabaka and the Ancestors released the album "We Are Sent Here by History".
