Biography

Skuggor is a Swedish atmospheric black metal project built around the solitary vision of its sole member, M., who handles all instruments. Rooted in atmospheric and depressive black metal, the project explores the darker, more introspective dimensions of the genre, balancing melancholic melodies with immersive soundscapes and an atmosphere of isolation.

Skuggor's music draws much of its character from the natural world, evoking vast forests, fading light and the quiet desolation of the wilderness. Rather than relying exclusively on raw aggression, the project emphasizes atmosphere, repetition and gradual musical development, allowing its compositions to unfold as introspective journeys through melancholy and darkness. The result is a sound that combines the bleakness of depressive black metal with the expansive, contemplative qualities of atmospheric black metal.

Following the Drowning in the Undergrowth demo in 2022 and the single A Life in Eternal Darkness in early 2023, Skuggor released its debut full-length, Skogshypnos, in April 2023. The album established the project's immersive approach through extended compositions and a strong emphasis on atmosphere. This was followed by Whispers of Ancient Spells in February 2024, further developing its shadowy, nature-oriented sound.

In May 2025, Skuggor released Where Sun Resigns through Naturmacht Productions. Spanning seven tracks, the album combines mournful melodies, atmospheric passages and a persistent sense of emotional desolation. In September 2026, the project returned with The Expanse, continuing its exploration of atmospheric black metal and the expansive sonic landscapes that define its work.

Through its solitary creative vision and emphasis on melancholy, nature and introspection, Skuggor offers a deeply atmospheric interpretation of black metal, where darkness is not merely an aesthetic but an environment in which the music slowly takes shape.
