Biography

Smallmouth was a band in the mid-to-late 1990s in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They came out of the Liberty-Mowat scene that also spawned or featured Venus Cures All, The Sadies, Adventure Playground, Satan's Arch-Enemy God, Guh, and many others. They started out as a three piece consisting of a different John Macdonald (guitar & singing), a different R.Kelly (bass & singing), and a different Johnny LaRue. After their first release, a cassette with seven and a half songs (recorded with Dale Morningstar at the legendary Gas Station), they were joined by that Uncle Hennypenny on tape loops and effects pedals. This particular uncle had previously accompanied them on a tour of eastern Canada with their musical brethren Pecola.

In 1997, Teenage USA released Smallmouth's only CD, All Ports in Frequent Seas (also recorded with Dale Morningstar at the Gas Station). Like the cassette, it got some good reviews and some people bought it. Smallmouth played a lot of shows in support of All Ports, including two US tours.

They released a split seven inch with Pecola the next year. Their contribution, Weck, is a real bummer and some people liked it for that.

Johnny LaRue stopped playing with the band a while later, and Blake Howard of Guh filled in for their last ten shows or so.

At that point Smallmouth couldn't think of any more songs that they collectively liked, and one regular audience member was heard to say, "It seems like you guys aren't trying any more" so they packed it in.

Bloop.
